This small village is the almost obligatory passage upstream (or after) a visit to Machu Picchu. Formerly called "Aguas Calientes" in reference to the hot springs that allow natural baths. Renamed "Machu Picchu Pueblo" for reasons of tourism marketing, the village is still accessible only by rail. The flooding of the turbulent river that encircles the mountains have already caused landslides that blocked hundreds of tourists on the Machu Picchu site to a helicopter evacuation.
