Commissioned in 1636 by Joseph de Gex, Baron de Saint-Christophe and Lord of Vallon, with the communicants from the village to give thanks for protection received during an outbreak of plague at the beginning of the 17th century.
"... desiring to accomplish and make devotion by them in the month of December in the year of Our Lord 1630 at which time it pleased Divine Misericord to visit some of the people in the present place and protect Samoën from the scourge of plague and contagion..."
