This is a 12th century fortress built on a ‘verrou glaciaire’, or hill formed of hard rock at a narrowing in a glacial valley, overlooking the Gorges du Guil. The citadel dates from before 1260. Château-Queyras is located in the Hautes-Alpes and housed soldiers. It was only used twice in the wars between the Protestants and Catholics. The military architect Vauban launched a restoration project in the fort in 1700. Access to the fort is via a drawbridge and this prestigious site was used as a location during the filming of the French film Le Bossu. Open everyday from May to All Saints’ Day (1 November), guided tours available.
