This set of fountains was built to fill in three stone vaults created by Jean Alluys, architect and mason, in 1676. At the time, they supported the terrace of the Jardin de Ville park and occasionally sheltered produce merchants. This fountain was the first to pump water from the Chartreuse mountains to Grenoble’s left bank, via pipes that run from the Saint Jean source and under the Isere river.
